THINGS I USE
While the myth "The better your tools, the better your work will be" is just a myth, having the right materials that fit you can certainly help in developing yours lettering and drawing skills. I’m not an expert on all the tools available out there, but this material list is based on my personal experience and how I draw. These are my favorite tools to use, and while they are the most suitable for me, they are by no means the best tools you could find, nor necessarily what is best for you. Take this list for what it truly is: A piece information shared by a friend. I hope it gives you some ideas and pointers, whether you're just beginning your adventure into lettering or are an experienced letterer looking to explore.
I wish you a very good time spent with your paper, pencil, and mind in this practice.
May there always be sparkles
from your finger tips!
Kaweco Special Mechanical Pencil - 0.5 mm
The weight and thickness of this pencil are just as handsome as its matte finish. It feels like true love in my hand that I can’t do without.
Itoya Helvetica Mechanical Pencil - 0.5 mm
I use this red pencil with red lead for drawing guides and sketches. It's a very solid pencil with a matte-finished beautiful body.
Tombow MONO Zero Eraser - Round 2.3mm
The small eraser tip allows me to get into the details, making more precise corrections. The pencil-like hold enhances the sense of drawing the negative space.
Tombow MONO Dust Catch Eraser
Perfect for cleaning up larger areas and darker marks!
Clear Ruler with Markings - 35cm
The parallel and perpendicular markings are my best friends for drawing guidelines and checking alignment. A ruler I’ve had since college.
Stalogy Sheet Graph-Paper Pad - A4
Finally! Graph paper with a margin around the page!!! The light grid means minimal distraction and soft on the eyes. This paper is smooth to draw on and the aesthetic look of the page itself makes it such a delight and has become my favorite.
Bienfang Graphics 360 Marker Paper Pad - 9”x12”
Marker paper is thin and nice to draw on, and the slight transparency allows you to lay it over your sketch for refinement and changes. Bienfang just happens to have the most pleasant-looking cover page design, making it my go-to.
I will be adding more to this list in the future to include other writing instruments, journaling materials, and digital tools.
